With all this nice weather, it has got me thinking about doing some spring cleaning which includes cleaning all my rugs. Though I dread starting it, I do love the feeling of a clean house when I am done.

The best way to clean your rugs is to hire a professional rug cleaning service, but some may decide not to go that route and only clean the spots or high traffic areas yourself.

Cleaning stains and spots really depends on the type of rug and the type of stain you are trying to get out and what you need to do and use to remove it.
For general spills on any type of rug, as soon as it happens, use a dry cotton towel or white paper towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible. A good hint is to put several paper towels over the spill and then put a few books or something flat and heavy on top of the paper towels. This will help to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Keep replacing the towels until the area is dry.

Then if there is any debris such as food on the rug, scrape it off with a dull instrument. The mildest way to remove a stain is to mix a small amount of dish soap into a cup of water. . Put some of the dish soap mixture on a clean towel or sponge and lightly blot the stain in a circular motion working from the outside in. Rinse thoroughly with clean water without saturating the area, then blot again. Never scrub, use heat or agitate the carpet because you could risk ruining the carpet fibers or letting the spill soak through the carpet pad. . Then blot the area again with a clean dry towel.

Once a year, we recommend using a professional rug cleaner to keep your carpets and rugs looking like new.
